Concentration Description

Developmental Coaching focuses on guiding individuals through the stages and transitions of their personal and professional lives. Unlike traditional coaching, which often addresses specific issues or goals, developmental coaching takes a holistic approach. It considers the multi-dimensional aspects of a person’s life, such as career, family dynamic and personal aspirations.

This type of coaching is grounded in the understanding that human development is neither linear nor predictable and recognizes the ups and downs of life.

Meridian University's Developmental Coaching concentration emphasizes coursework designed for professional practice in executive coaching, developmental assessment, and the management of deliberately developmental organizations.

Key figures in this field include Carol Dweck, known for her research on growth mindset; Robert Kegan, who introduced the concept of deliberately developmental organizations; Jean Piaget, renowned for his theory of cognitive development; and Erik Erikson, famous for his theory on psychosocial development.

Building on that foundational theory, students will explore topics such as ritualization, liminality, culture as strategy, capabilities, and perspectival capability. The curriculum integrates foundational theories with coaching practices, providing a comprehensive understanding of personal and professional development.

Graduates will gain practical skills to support clients through significant life and career transitions, fostering growth and resilience. This concentration prepares students to apply developmental coaching methods in diverse professional settings, including corporate environments, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, private coaching practices, and online developmental coaching.

By understanding and leveraging the principles of developmental psychology, graduates will be equipped to guide individuals through the complexities of their developmental journeys, helping them achieve their full potential.
